Why ImagiNations in 17 Century

17 Century is very interesting period for ImagiNations, the territories during these years were more a familiar possessions than a nation or a independent state. For this reason, the relation among them were very conflictive, therefore, here we can find a great period for wargaming.

I was very interested in something like that, I dislike a lot the main stream wargaming periods, because normally there are great "I-win-all" army or two, and all the others are ugly scrub. Not to say the typical grognard who can't maintain his mouth closed... and is there to say "That uniform is incorrect, they didn't fight in this order...." With the ImagiNations... you can do whatever you want... it's my game, and I play it in my way.

For that reason I consider that the second half of 17 century is a very interesting period, a not main stream period, between the 30 years war and Succession Wars, not only would keep the grognard away, but also the troops during this period started to left the pikes and the musket gained his predominant position in the battlefield. So, you can play battle with pikemen, or without them.

But not only this period is interesting by the war aspect, because in this period we have the pirates attacking the coast and the ships, the conquest of America (both in the North and in the South) and Africa, offering a wide variety of situations where you can play colonial encounters, expeditions, and skirmish between professional armies and "savages", giving a lot of story possibilities.

Let's not forget, the witch hunters, the mythical creatures of Central Europe giving to the scenarios the fantasy setting that gives a change of setting which needs sometimes a wargamer like me.

Now let’s enrol and play the game

Patrolling in the frontier

Year 1660 - March

Gotthard's unit was responsible of patrolling the north forest of Trüzesen. This area has some houses which have been abandoned by the miners because of the runnig out of the mines.

The patrol was formed by Gotthard and 4 men more, they must check that the houses where empty and that there were nobody wandering in the area.

As soon soon as they advanced to the old ruins they spotted a group of men who belong to the Barlang army positioned near of one of the houses. Without a word, and following the orders the started to fire against the enemy, causing two casualties. The other soldier started to run, fleeing from there, and the leader tried to find shelter in the house.

Gotthard's men advanced cautious to the house, and they shouted to the man to leave the house with raised hands. After some intense minutes, the military went out and was caught as prisoner, bringing him to the headquarters to be interrogated.

SIN PIEDAD OTHER USES

SIN PIEDAD is a ruleset as good as the soundtruck "Senza Pietà" of the film "A fistful of Dollars"in which the author based his tittle. This ruleset is a very simple wargame explained in no more than 6 pages which were published in the FALCATA Magazine 6 months ago, focused in the Far West skirmish among gunslingers. The rulebook not only presents the rules, but also offers rules for campaigns, wound recovering and more things, and zombies!

As happens normally in this blog, I am here to publish something different, to break with the established ideas, with this wargame it has been very easy, in the first part of this article you will be able to see how the game works with muskets during the 18th century. Let's take a look on the AAR:

Intead of using chips, I preferred to use cards

The troops advanced covered be the walls

The firefight finished with the red side as winners.

After this first test, I saw that I needed discharged, wounded and activated markers.

Following the success, for the second time I decided that this wargame has possibilities to be used as a wargame for bigger battles, in this case I have used the armies for the Nine Years War that I have half painted.

This time I changed a pair of rules, the first one is that each unit is activated by the card (chip) of its colour, and each unit lose one miniature each time that it suffer a wound. Is when a unit loses half of its miniatures the moment when the unit starts to suffer -1 and is considered Disordered (Wounded in the original rules). In addition,I added markers for discharged weapons (the Red Cross) and Disordered (The bell) Well.. that's all, let's watch the AARs photos:

At the end the white side lost the battle, this time because the dices didn't help them.

In conclusion, the wargame works very good not only as skirmish but also as big battle encounter, the next step is to use 6mm stands for really big battle with no less than 6 units per side, with cavalry and maybe artillery... no doubt about that is more to come!

Expedition "Black Camel in Jimland" Chapter 1

Professor Jefferson Guy mustered, with the help of his friend Sir Ulysses Corwin, an expedition to explore the lost continent of Uzumbu.

The expedition consists of the two explorers, five soldiers and twenty porters, ten of them with food, and five of them with trade.

The expedition left Ibias Cape the April 3, 1751. Advancing into the dark jungle, there they found a groups of natives in a village that offered them some trading products, but Jefferson sure of they lucky start avoid the exchange

April 4, 1751
A foggy day precluded the possibility of advancing, the bearers are afraid of the situation.

April 5, 1751
The expedition  found the birth of a river that runs into the bushes, when Sir Ulysses was preparing the men for establishing the camp, a group of natives assaulted the group. The fray was very fast and the the natives run away after suffer some casualties.

April 6, 1751
Today Professor Jefferson is very happy he has discovered a new creature specie, it is like a lizzard but with purple dots, here is a image of his new discovery. It will be called Heloderma Europaeus Saurus. This discovery will report money for the expedition. Besides, we found a group of natives that where very friendly with us... but the porters are not happy with them... each time we find friendly natives... the things go wrong...

April 7, 1751
We have arrived to Savannah, it could be a great day but we have had an accident, because one of the soldiers went out of the trail for having a look on the brushes near the trail when he fell down into quick sand, another soldier lost his life trying to help him, and myself suffered heavy wound in my arms and stomach while I was trying to save the men. I can walk, and I can only write this diary between moments of fever and vomits... we have decided to go back to Ibias Cape.

Will we where going back home, a group of natives has assaulted us, but they ran away when the shoot of our fire weapons has killed their leader.

April 8, 1751
The bad luck is after us, a torrential flow has killed two porters that were carrying my pallet. we have lost, but if everything goes good tomorrow we will arrive home.

April 12, 1751
We are in Ibias Cape, I am a little bit better and I hope that soon we will begin another expedition. By now, the last expedition has yielded 200 coins, that we will use for invest in more material and soldiers for the next expedition.

ZONE EXPLORED

Patrol in the valley

There was a cold winter, but the first melting were creating  small streams, and the English troops decided to patrol to the old bridge near to the Garret Inn, at the winter's begin the French troops stablished a small camp 5 km ago from the Inn.

The patrol arrived to the forest...

A pair of French soldiers run into the English from the other side of the forest, but run away to the Inn

The English soldiers advanced into Inn
But a howling broke the silent skirmish.... a werewolf from the mountains had arrived....

The carnage begun... the werwolf attacked the French troops, and the English decided to flee from the Inn

Something dark is hidden in the mountains....

I used the OnePageRules (Skirmish), using the Empire stats for the musketeers and the leaders (State Marksmen and Captains)

Mustering troops for the Nine Years Wars

I have been painting some Lukio miniatures, expanding my armies.
I have mustered two English troops and two French troops.

Here are some photos

Painting some 15mm jewels for Nine Yeras War from Lurkio

Some time ago I received these little jewels for my incipient Nine years War project.

The miniatures are from Lurkio, and I must admit that I have fallen in love with them, they are a little big bigger and chubbier than the classic 15mm, but very highly detailed, and have a great variety, here you can see a comparative photo
LàR Essex,  Lurkio,    Irregular     and    Donnington

Here they are ready for be painted

And here is the final result

At the begin I feel a little bit startled by the high detailed miniatures, but after a pair of brush-strokes I discovered that the miniature was very grateful and easy to paint.

I can assure that I have fond the rank and file miniatures for my Nine Years war Project with Lurkio miniatures
