  * Speed: Cuánto mueves en pulgadas.
  * Melee: Habilidad de combate CaC.
  * Accuracity: Habilidad de disparo.
  * Defense: Modificador a la salvación.
  * Courage:
  * Health: Puntos de vida.
  * Cost: Cuantos puntos cuesta tener la miniatura en la banda.

Portable Wargame Horse & Musket

Not everything is skirmish... A year ago I started to read Portable Wargames from Bob Cordery; his rulebooks are based in an original system where the battle board is a gridded area, similar to a chess board, around 8x8 squares, where you can move your units between 3 and 2 squares, turning them as you need, they have 4 hit points, cavalry 3 and artillery 2. And with a 5+ in your dice, you hit the enemy.

Although the rules look like simple, they are very demanding to be mastered since, the movements are short and the opponent could surprise you with an involving movement.

Mainly, I have played musket and horses battles, testing various battle boards, and with different success, one of the main aspects that I wanted to improve was the grid aspect, something that as player could distinguish on the board, but difficult to be seen in the photos; another aspect was that I have a bunch of 60 mm front stands, so the squares needed of that size.

Finally, I contacted with Wargen, a nice guy who helped me find not only the background but also the best squares with the size and line colour to have the perfect mat. This is the masterpiece:

I recommend you to take a look on Cordery's books here and there.

The version of the rule sets that I use is The Portable Pike and Shot Wargame from Alan Saunders, who has modified the command rules to allow that with a roll of dice the number of units that you can move each turn varies, what is very changeling.

And now, you can watch a battle that I have played, the units where:

The French side wins the initiative, and the Infantry captures the first BUA.

The French side continues advancing

The English starts to respond, and the muskets shoot

Some movements with the French trying to control the situation.

More muskets and white clouds...

Looks like that the British commander has started to think and stopped drinking...
OK, time to size the Frenchs.

Time up! The British are the winners

The French side was bearing the Initiative during the first six turns, but the Fortune goddess didn't smile them in the combats since the British showed their superiority with the muskets.

Finally, the British side won the battle, devastating the French troops.... Rule Britannia!

Chapter III: Walking back home

While the heroes were returning to Onnen, they watched a group of men surrounding another one, who looked like scared. It was like if they were threatening him, they were four men, and just one burly.

So they decided to approach them stealthily; while they were closer, they could listen to their voices, looked like that they were asking the man about a third one, who was called Allan Beck, they were asking about where did he live and who told him that he was the objective. The frightened man was completely exhausted, so he was a puppet under the powerful arms of the biggest one.

Slorm shouted, and the men turned on their heels, they were surprised so, Viren and Landon shot their weapons with their typical success... it means, no success. So the crooks advanced against the newcomers, Slorm charged against them while the others reload their weapons...

The burly one ran to Slorm, while the others moved more slowly, this let the shooters shoot against them another time, one fell down with a stone embedded in his forehead, but the other continued advancing till attacked Viren. His widow will not miss him...

The combat continued for some time, swords and hits crashed into the armours, and the blood and shouts increased the tension of the scene, while only the biggest and one of his minion survived, finally Viren bit the dust and Slorm enrage and slam his powerful fist in the crooks body, and bent his body sending it among the bushes. Landon finished with the biggest.

Landon run to save Viren's life using a potion, while Slorm continued smashing the robbers' dead bodies. Meanwhile, the poor man, the messenger, lay on the ground, losing his life slowly... without possible salvation...

Viren started to improve after drinking the potion, and thirty minutes he was alive, but he couldn't walk by himself and felt a little dizzy. So he stayed sat while Slorm and Landon were investigating the bodies, they found an envelope with an official stamp, from Rhodos addressed to "Allan Beck". After hesitate a little, they decided to open it, inside there was a letter where somebody called "Schwarcer Wolf", the text was in a strange dialect, so they couldn't understand all the writing. After reading it, it was clear that somebody wanted to kill or kidnap Allan Beck in no more than six days, and that he was an important person in a village.

Some minutes later, the men started to wonder how to bring this letter to the recipient, and explored the ground trying to find tracks, to know the possible direction of the messenger... [50% - 3,4 - Not, but] After the combat, the tracks were difficult to be followed, but Landon, as a good ranger could confirm that at least the horse tracks were moving to the North, but he needs more info, so he is going to advance a stretch of the road to confirm it. In the meantime, Slorm will be helping Viren and hidding the corpses, and looking for the messenger horse.

Viren turned back two hours later with good news....

The time was flying against them...

-------------------

Note: To know if they could find the track, to know the direction of the messenger, I used the Enquiry Table, and established that was a 50% of success, them I rolled two dice, and I got a 3 and 4, so the answer was "No, but" So, the Ranger couldn't find a real track, but if he lost his time he could get something. Therefore, he advance and I decided to roll to know what happens, Does the Ranger have an encounter? [Considering the encounter as something negative for him] He is a ranger, he is following a track and he is alone in a road, but he is not stupid, so he advances carefully. I roll in the Enquiry Table and get "Some possibility" [3,2] Yes, but... He finds somebody but in good situation for him.

I rolled in the Legends of Araby Outside - North Villages Table, and I get a 7, villagers. They are not interested in him, but he asks them about Allan Beck. [Some possibility to know about him - 3,2 - No] So they don't know about him, hence, the track was no correct, the messenger was travelling to the North.
