SBH- Cavemen campaign

This post come up as take the bait from alith_anarr, about creating a short campaign based on SBH, with a Cave Wars setting. Where here is my proposal:

 Setting:
During the last season, the weather has been very dry and the animals have started to emigrate, the reason is, as the big shaman says, that the great god Kulila is unhappy and has punished to the Green Parrot clan. A group of powerful warrior have to go to the mountain, and capture a big wolf to sacrifice it to Kulila, to recover their favours. Here is their adventure.

 Cavemen side:
The cavemen player will build a 300 points warband using the next troops:
0-1 Cavemen Leader: C4 Q3+ Dashing, Leader, Heavy Armour, Savage. 88pts
 1-4 Veteran Cavemen: C3 Q4+ Dashing, Steadfast. 36 pts
 2+ Cavemen warrior: C3 Q4+. Gregarious 27 pts
 1-5 Cavemen Slingers: C2 Q4+. Shooter: Medium. 18 pts
2+ Cavemen Firebearers: C2 Q4+. Terror (Only Animals) 30 pts

Scenario 1: Looking for the Beast Lair.

The hunters arrive to the zone where the Beast lives, an arid zone with some weed bushes. In the North are some caves where the Beast has his lair. The cavemen must find where it lives, so they start to explore.

Objectives: The cavemen must find the correct cave, there are three, the first one could be with a 5+ in one dice, the second try will be a 3+ in a dice, and if no look in the last cave the will find the beast.

Enemies: They are no alone, there are a group of cave orcs or lizardmen wandering in the zone looking for a prey. They will deploy in the middle of the table.

The orc stats can be taken from SBH Orc Warriors, or Lizarmen and will form a warband of around 200 pts.

Modifications:
The scenario can be made more difficult if the enemies warband is formed by a bigger group, or if they are deployed in two groups.

Scenario 2: Hunting the Beast.

The hunters have taken about the Beast out, now they must send it into the pit that is in the middle of the table. It has one medium and one short of side. The beast will attack any miniature closer than 1 Long move, and will ignore any other creature.
It will flee from the Firebearers when they come closer than 1 Long stick, moving away from them in a random direction, roll one dice:
1-2 The beast will flee to his right
3-4 The beast will flee directly in straight line from the fire.
5-6 The beast will flee to his left.

It will never run away from the board, and if it arrive to the border, and must move more, will move to contact with the closer miniature.

The beast can't be killed, because it must be sacrificed by the Shaman in the village.
The Cavemen Leader has a pot with transfix spell that requires 2 turns being near the creature doing nothing more.

In the zone will be a pair of dire wolves that will attack any cavemen that get close of them.

The Beast stats are:
Beast C5 Q4+ Big, Tough, Savage.

Scenario 3: Returning home.

The path is one long stick wide, and is clear terrain. In their sides, there are a forest plenty of protection for the ambushers, with little clear zones.

The cavemen are returning with the beast captured. But an enemy warband is ready for ambush them.
The ambushers will be a orcs or lizarmen warband of 250 pts

The cavemen have to cross the table through the path. They will deploy in a border of the path.
The ambusher will deploy two markers (one of them is a dummy) for each ambushed troop, no closer than 1 short stick from the path. They have to not allow the cavemen arrive to the other side of the table.

When starts the battle, with the first attack, the Beast starts to recover from the spell, and in the third turn of battle the Beast will be ready and will start to break the ties.
On turn 4 from the first attack roll a dice, with a 5+ the Beast is free and will attack the nearest miniature.
On turn 5 from the first attack roll a dice, with a 4+ the Beast is free.
On turn 6 from the first attack roll a dice, with a 3+ the Beast is free.
On turn 7 from the first attack roll a dice, with a 2+ the Beast is free.On turn 8 from the first attack the creature is free.

After been free, the creature will be Knocked Down during this first turn, so will use its activations for stand up. Them, will roll every turn 3 dices, for activation.

With the Beast free, the only way to knock it down is throwing on it a Transfix pot. The Leader still have for two shoots.

If the cavemen can't humble the Beast another time, it will attack them trying to assassin them.
If the cavemen can arrive to the other side of the table with the Beast tied, they have won the campaign.

 That's all by now.

TBH: Creating a character

Andrea from Ganesha Games, the author of SBH, FL and another jewels, has published the Volume 1 for his Tales of Blades and Heroes RPG:  Tales of Beasts and Perils Volume One

But now I am going to explain how to create a character for his RPG.

One of the things that I criticized about the Ganesha Games was that I needed a more complex characters, with some skills, more soul, because I love to play scenarios where the characters have to hear, hide or trade with the other characters, not only to kill or be killed.

The RPG from Ganesha maintains the Quality and Combat system, but adds some new elements, that give to the this RPG game a very interesting taste, between wargame and old school RPG.

Let's take a look on them, while I create my new character.

Let's start, he is going to be Slorm a Ranger.

All the characters will start with a Quality of 4+ and a Combat factor of 1. The quality can my improved paying a lot of points, so normally all the characters will start with this Quality. The Combat factor can be improved buying a Light Armour skill, that gives as a Combat of 2. Until here, nothing different. Now starts the RPG taste, the think that I think that makes this game very interesting.

You can buy skill and special rules, that let you to have a proficiency with weapons. For example, Slorm is a ranger that uses the bow with some proficiency and the sword too. So I buy levels to use them, for example Level four for the bow, and three for the sword. So when Slorm has to shoot with the bow he will have a Combat stat of 4, and when he will combat with his sword he will have a C of 3.

What happen with the combat so?, is easy, when Slorm combats with the sword he will use the C of Sword Level 3, if he attacks with his bow C4, but if he is attacked with a bow he will use his normal C factor: 1. If I bought to him the Light Armour skill, he will have a Combat 2, so he can defend himself from the shooting attack with a C2, instead the initial 1.

If you use a weapon for that weapon that you don't have proficiency, you will have a malus of -1 with it.

Also, he knows how to move in the forest, so I buy to him the skill Forester, with it he can walk through the forest with penalizing.

And I want that he will be an agile creature, so I buy Agile, so the character has +1 to Q rolls when performing acts of dexterity and coordination.

All the characters has three main Characteristics: Physical, Mental and Social, they are based on the Quality of the character, but one of them can be downgraded, upgrading another one. Or modified for some special situations, for example Strong boost the quality when the character performs act of strenght.

Now time for buying weapons and clothes, in the Equipment section.

Every player starts with 200 silver coins. I bought a sword, light armor, bow, backpack, quiver, and clothes. All that costed me around 150 silvers, 50 coins in the pocket and ready for starting the adventure.

New month, a lot of delayed material

During the last month I have been very busied I have been painting, playing and reading.

In this post I plan to summary more or less all the things that I have done related with the hobby.

During this month I have played two times to Maurice from Sam Mustafa, with my tricorned friend Mitxi.

The first battle was very good, no scenery, two armies, and a typical battle. The photos down here:

This first battle was fast and furious,  Maurice looks like a easy to play game, but not a B&P game. It requires a knowledge of the ruleset, and a little good luck with the dices and cards.

We tried it another time, for this one we played Moys 7-9-1757, based on Die Kriegskunst ruleset. This battle was worst because, we didn't balance the scenario, so we found a few problems with the deployment of the troops, and the turn change.

But we think that the scenario worth another try, so on our next battle, we will battle it again. The attacking troops didn't arrive the hill, the objective.

I have been painting some miniatures, some 15mm, and some 10mm.

GZG troops for New Begins and zombies and civilians for ATZ both from THW.

Irregular Goblins 10mm for SBH

Pendraken AWI for Long Rifle from THW
I am very proud of that woman, she is based on this 28mm miniature, and I think that she looks like very well :)

A very busy month, a productive month

THW is not an exclusivist wargame

Motivated by the comments of Fantalonia, I have been thinking about what uses can have THW Reaction system with other wargames.

THW Reaction system is very useful for solo or same side wargaming. In that system you check your Reputation (the miniature quality, motivation, experience...) with two dices, if you get a score under or equal to your REP stat you have get one success. If you get one success you get a partial success, and if you get two success you get a total success.

I am not completely comfortable with the REP system for the combats, and there are another wargames that work very good for "typical wargaming", but not for solitary wargamers; so I have been browsing with the THW reaction systems and other wargames. Let's take a look about the alternative uses that the Reaction System can have for solo gaming.

THW + USEME, the ELAN system of USEME, is very similar to the REPutation stat from THW, so you can check with two dices against your ELAN and get the success of your checks reactions. In this case the troops will continue having two actions, but they will be able to use only one to move, because they can check for "Fast moving" and move more than the basic movement rate.

THW + SBH (Ganesha Games), the Quality can be used in the same way but in the other way around. I mean, with REP system, the higher REP is better, and with the Quality the lower stat is better. So to check the reaction you will have to roll your dic trying to get the best result. For example, an Elf with Quality 4+ wants to charge against the orcs, you have to roll two dices, and get with them 4+, in a very similar way than the activations checks from Ganesha Games. If you use THW for the activations, you will not check for the actions that you can do each turn, you will follow the normal activation rules for THW.

THW + Disponsable Heroes (Iron Ivan Games) here the troops stats are very similar, except the Guts score, and they are checked with 1D10, so, we must continue checking the reactions but using ten side dices. As the better Gut stat is the higher one, we will follow the THW rules for checking.

The THW free version is "Chain Reaction 3", with a light version of THW ruleset that have some reaction tables that we can use for test the system.

Kurt has send us a interesting idea, that I quote here:
"The PEF mechanic can be used with any rule set. This gives you an instant encounter that will play differently every time.

If you want a more peaceful mechanic and a little more RPG feel, you can play the Chillin encounter found in I Zombie or New Beginnings.

If you want NPC/AI movement in Song of Blades Heroes you can use the tables on NPC movement from WHAA.
"

ShadowSea, SBH Expansion

No usan Warjacks.
 - Marineros Oscuros: Sería algo así como el ejército del Caos, , hecho a partir de los marineros muertos;

One thing I dislike about SBH was the lack of variety of weapons.
With the publication of Flying Lead and ShadowSea this topic I think that has been solved, let's take a look between what was and what I think that it will be:

 SBH Bowmen
In SBH the Bowmen had a Combat stat of 3; so in close combat they fought as a normal warrior, and I ever thought that the bowmen fight with less quality than the normal warrior because they were trained for use the bow, and avoid the close combat.
To solve this incongruity I think that Flying Lead has the solution.
There you can find the stat for the Longbow: C+0, Short Range, Slow Reload, Silent.
This stat is OK for the moderm combat where the Bow and Longbow are not lethal weapons, but, during the Middle Age, in trained hands they were really dangerouse, lets give them the adequate stats for SBH
Bow: C+1, Medium Range, Slow Reload, Silent. Cost: 8 pts
Longbow: C+1, Long Range, Slow Reload, Silent. Cost: 12 pts
I have decided to add +1 to the Combat stat, it is because the Bowmen combat better with the bow than in close combat. So the Bowmen will have Combat 2, instead of 3 as says in SBH.

Using the Flying Lead weapons creator to create the weapons you can give a much  more variety of weapons to SBH.

 SBH Armour
Another thing I dislike is the lack of variety of armours. The Heavy Armour rule looked me very light. But with the ShadowSea rules all this is solved:
 - Light Armour, follows the Heavy Armour Special rule from SBH. So any time the model is beaten in combat by one point, the model does not Recoil or Fall.
 - Heavy Armour, follows the Heavy Armour Special rule from ShadowSea. So any time the model is beaten in combat by one or two points, the model does not Recoil or Fall. Any model wearing Heavy Armour cannot benefit from the Stealth rule and has -2 on Quality for purposes of climbing and leaping.

 Extra Life Points
The last one, one think that I didn't understand is that with SBH is impossible to create tough creatures with more than one wound. But with the Fear and Faith supplement "Kooky Teenage Monster Hunters" it is solved. Let's take a look on Back to Back special rule, it let you to have a character that can resist two wounds before die, but adds the Danger Sense rule, ok, we can take it out and reduce the cost, in that way.
Back to Back Special Rule = 15 points
 Back to Back - Danger Sense = 15 - 3= 12 pts
Each extra life point cost: 12 pts

Some readers could say that the Tough rule represents that Special Rule, but I am not agree because if I want to create a slow and tough troops I can't, for example a zombie: C2 Q6+, with one impact it will die, but with this new special rule this zombie will resist at least two impacts.

Arco: C+1, Medium Range, Slow Reload, Silent. Coste: 8 pts
Arco Largo: C+1, Long Range, Slow Reload, Silent. Coste: 12 pts

Regla Back to Back = 15 pts
Back to Back – Danger Sense = 15 – 3= 12 pts

Song of Lilies and Lions

Sir Lacy (Caballero Montado) - Personalidad
Puntos 120
Calidad 3+
Combate 5
Reglas Esp

Chivalry, Knight, Heavy Armour, Heroes Horse, Leader, Long Move
Sir Gaston (Caballero Montado)
Puntos 80
Calidad 3+
Combate 4
Reglas Esp
Chivalry, Knight, Heavy Armour, Heroes Horse, Long Move

Sir Piers (Caballero Montado)  - Caballeros Menores o Escuderos montados
Puntos 70
Calidad 3+
Combate 3
Reglas Esp

Chivalry, Knight, Heavy Armour, Heroes Horse, Long Move

Wynken (Alabardero)
Puntos 30
Calidad 4+
Combate 4
Reglas Esp

Heavy Armour, Short Move

Algunas reglas especiales caseras y anotaciones:

Arma

Acciones para Recargar
Arco Largo, Arco Corto, y Hondas
None
Ballesta
1 acción
Arma de Pólvora
2 acciones
